I am an endlessly curious, lifelong lover of learning and nature, and I fervently believe in the power of storytelling. I look forward to sharing what I learn as I pursue an education focused on biomimetic restorative organic horticulture to help preserve biodiversity as we weather climate change, and I’m eager to help people and communities along the way.

I started working in professional multimedia publishing before graduating from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities with a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and Mass Communications and a minor in theater arts, which proved to be more useful than expected when penning and transforming scripts for digital audiences and speakers.

Below, you can find a chronological selection of publications I’ve edited and work samples I’ve written and produced throughout my career, which spans broadcast, digital, magazine, and print production to consulting on communications strategy and start-to-finish project management for research-based advocacy and coalition-building campaigns.

MAGAZINES

My love for magazines began in my pre-Internet youth. Each week, I’d read about musicians, then cut out glossy words and pictures to collage. During undergrad, I studied magazine writing and editing with Pamela Hill-Nettleton, and I remain grateful for her mentorship and incisive feminist media analysis. In my senior year at the U of M, one of my capstone courses covered magazine editing and production. Under the guidance of the editor of Minnesota Monthly, I both edited and a wrote for the theater-themed magazine we created from start to finish in a semester. Meanwhile, I was simultaneously learning on the job as an editorial intern with Tiger Oak Publications — fact checking, editing, proofing, and launching multiple titles in local and regional markets.

From left to right: Intermission, a student-run magazine I edited and wrote for; Six Meetings & Events magazines I edited and launched as an intern with Tiger Oak Publications, covering California, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, and the Pacific Northwest; Three editions of Twin Cities Spaces magazine, which I wrote for during and after college.

NEWS PRODUCTION

I got into broadcast and digital news production shortly after graduation. Initially, I was hired to moderate content for a Hearst Television, Inc., program providing young journalists a social platform to report on high school sports. Later that summer, I was assigned to cover the Interstate 35W bridge collapse, and I both reported breaking developments live from the scene and developed a web archive dedicated to ongoing coverage of the disaster that was commended by the New York Times for its breadth of detail and utility. Afterward, I joined the national news team at Internet Broadcasting as a HUB Editor, serving as a reporter, copy editor, and digital news producer while managing verticals related to education, the environment, and politics — creating evergreen content that remains popular with syndicated partners today. During these years, I also produced innovative, interactive online presentations and filled in remotely for local editors as needed for dozens of partnered newsrooms across the nation.

Using data from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and Tableau Public, I developed an interactive and transformative map to show polluted areas and types of contamination.

When a digital news producer slot opened up at KMSP-TV, my mentor Nancy Cassutt Ison urged me to contact the news director and throw my hat in the ring. I quickly took to running newscast livestreams, clipping videos, and managing both breaking news email alerts and social media. I’m proud of the local features and investigations we produced daily while updating our website for an increasingly mobile-first audience, and was delighted to be recognized in 2013 with an Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Award for Excellence in Evening Newscast Production, and again the next year with an Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Award for News Excellence.

FREELANCING

From the start to today, I’ve freelanced for a variety of clients. I am happy to provide an array of services, including:

  • Accessibility consultations for digital platforms

  • Cross-functional calendar design and management

  • Data-driven A/B testing for messaging and beta testing for new tech tools

  • Designing and delivering email campaigns and segmented newsletters

  • Editing creative, marketing, and technical copy

  • Project management from idea to deliverable on deadline

  • Researching, writing, and publishing articles in alignment with AP style

  • Sensitivity editing from a trauma-informed media perspective guided by intersectional social justice principles

  • Tailoring social media strategies to drive organic profile growth and reach

I also earned top ratings as a transcriptionist with Rev.com, and volunteered alongside local activists and organizations.

I research, write, and produce a variety of commissioned pieces and source content for informative apps and websites.

I create press release materials and promote coverage opportunities to media contacts.

My career in journalism increased my awareness of persistent and systemic inequalities and injustices. I intentionally transitioned into advocacy and change support work because I wanted to be in a more proactive position, rather than constantly responding to current events. Moreover, I wanted to use the skills I cultivated in newsrooms to help address thorny issues the best way I know how — by amplifying and empowering grassroots leaders and innovative solutions.

The cause areas I am eager to enthusiastically support include:

  • Anti-racism

  • Climate justice

  • Disability justice

  • Economic justice

  • Food justice

  • Intersectional feminism

  • Land Back

  • LGBTQIA2S+ rights

COMMUNICATION COORDINATION & MANAGEMENT

Most recently, I merged advocacy and strategic, multi-platform communications at NCWIT, a national nonprofit and research center that was founded and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to increase the meaningful participation of women and underrepresented people in technology education and industries. As I grew from a contracted coordinator to Communications and Marketing Manager, I was delighted to help teams clear project backlogs, produce research-backed resources during a rebrand, and create an integrated content calendar to promote programs and initiatives dedicated to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the technology ecosystem.

I designed this presentation for conferences and webinars following the release of the 2022 update to the report titled “Who Invents IT? Women’s Participation in Information Technology Patenting.”

I also was delighted to hire and lead a small team to scale up and deploy new strategies for SEO, social media, and targeted email outreach. Here is one of my favorite examples:

Celebrating the young people who are the future of technology was a highlight of every award event, and these posts set new high water marks in user metrics.

In addition, I enjoyed publishing posts and educational tools in multiple languages — English, French, and Spanish — and I am keen to create multilingual media.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Ideally, I hope to support climate communications and changemakers to facilitate constructive international dialogue while my spouse and I pursue advanced degrees. I thrive working remotely across distributed, flexible teams and networks, and I excel at condensing complex topics into accessible, engaging formats for diverse audiences. I strive to uplift voices of impacted people to find solutions and create authentic, relatable, and memorable messages that inspire positive change. In all my work, I utilize multiple platforms and tools to meet people where they are, and to call communities to action, unite aligned groups around shared goals, and inspire people to connect as we co-create a better future for people and the planet.
